Founded in 1976 in Brighton, England, by Anita Roddick, The Body Shop is a global beauty brand. The Body Shop seeks to make a positive difference in the world by offering high-quality, naturally-inspired skincare, hair care and make-up produced ethically and sustainably. The Body Shop pioneered the philosophy that business can be a force for good and this ethos is still the brand’s driving force. The Body Shop has more than 3,000 stores in more than 60 countries.
Forever Against Animal Testing
In June 2017, The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International launched our global campaign, Forever Against Animal Testing. We have been campaigning against animal testing in cosmetics since 1989, and after influencing bans in the UK and EU we are now calling for an end to the cruel practice globally. We aim to inspire 8 million people to sign our petition, and will then call on the United Nations to implement an international convention on animal testing in cosmetics, ending it everywhere and forever.
In 1987, Anita Roddick launched The Body Shop’s Community Trade programme. Community Trade is our fair trade ingredient sourcing programme, through which we source natural ingredients direct from communities. Today, we fairly trade with 31 Community Trade suppliers all around the world who provide us with high quality ingredients, as well packaging and accessories. 95% of our formulas contain a Community Trade ingredient, meaning we can provide 25,000 people globally with a fair income and good working conditions.
Re-Wilding the World Through Bio-Bridges
In 2016, The Body Shop began building Bio-Bridges to help restore forests and protect endangered species. Our Bio-Bridge projects are rebuilding key areas of habitat that have been damaged by deforestation, saving endangered species and helping the local communities that surround them live sustainably.With the help of our customers, we have managed to support charities in 5 different countries so far, protecting over 41 million square metres of habitat. Following the success of our first three Bio-Bridges projects in 2016, we launched the World Bio-Bridges Mission in 2017, committing us to building an additional ten Bio-Bridges by 2020.
